WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT MSCHF’s BIG RED BOOTS.

You're not the only one who is confused by the large red boots that are plastered across your feeds.

For starters, they are formally known as Big Red Boots and, yes, they are real and for sale. The art collective MSCHF, which developed the Big Red Boots, was slyly coy about its most recent offering, but here is what we do know.

What are the Big Red Boots?

The Big Red Boots are obscenely large cartoonish boots that have recently been discovered on influencers and other fashion people and have gained notoriety for their absurd appearance. The Big Red Boots are both fashionable and a subversion of trends, much to how Crocs went from tacky dad shoes to a satirical fashion statement. The quickest response is that these are enormous cartoon boots. They are a critique of capitalism mass consumption and the transience of trends, to put it simply.

Who is the creator behind the Big Red Boots?

The MSCHF art collective is the maker of the Big Red Boots. MSCHF "subverts mass/popular culture and corporate operations and tools for analysis and action," according to its website. The "Satan Shoe" collaboration with Lil Nas X, popularly known as the Nike Air Max 97 sneakers with a blood drop in the air bubble, was also the brainchild of the collective. Nike filed a lawsuit against MSCHF(Opens in a new tab) for the illegal sale of its Nike Air Max 97 shoes. There has been no word on how Boots from Dora the Explorer feels about his boots being imitated.

Why is MSCHF selling Big Red Boots?

The description on the product page read, "The aesthetic Overton Window continues to extend open towards the surreal." In other words, this design represents how the virtual and actual worlds are fusing together more and more. "We are looking for supernormal stimuli as virtual and real-world aesthetics continue to converge. We grow to assume a certain level of unreality when half the sneakers we see on social media are renderings. VR chat footwear are called Big Red Boots." Groot hopes that makes things obvious.

What are the Big Red Boots made of?

The TPU that many phone cases are comprised of, rubber, and an EVA foam midsole and outsole make up the Big Red Boots. EVA is the same material used to make Crocs. In other words, the boots are springy, a touch mushy, and they would be interesting to nibble on.

How much do the Big Red Boots cost?

They cost $350, which depending on your interest in fashion is decently priced for a pair or boots, or ridiculously expensive for novelty rubber boots.

Where can I buy the Big Red Boots?

You can buy them on MSCHF.com(Opens in a new tab) and the MSCHF Sneakers app.

When are they available?

The Big Red Boots go on sale to the public on February 16 at 11 a.m. EST.

Help, how do I get the Big Red Boots off?

Good question. Some people have been struggling(Opens in a new tab) with this. Try enlisting a friend or two to help. Also, maybe wear some kind of grippy sock underneath to help the rubbery suctioned boots slide off.

How do I style the Big Red Boots?

Another good question! Wear with baggy pants and loud colors like IMG model Wisdom Kaye(Opens in a new tab). Or tuck pants into them and complete the outfit with an American flag sweater, like Jannik Diefenbach a.k.a. @jaadiee(Opens in a new tab)'s grandpa. With cartoonish big red boots, the possibilities are beyond your imagination.
